About the Artist
Current Work: Denise’s current work focuses on the relief in architectural ceramics and sculptured tile applications. She is currently applying her effort on public and private art installations, such as kitchen backsplashes, murals, tub/shower surrounds, fireplaces and fountains and more.
The journey of a lifetime ~
Denise’s artistic journey has taken seemingly unrelated paths throughout her lifetime. But now all those divergent trajectories have merged into a singular course filled with passionate creativity.
Her earliest memory of sculpting was as a small girl when she would dig chalk out of the ground behind her grandmother’s house to create people. Although these tiny treasures have long ago disappeared, the desire to create something from natural sources has not.
Denise spent 18 years in the insurance and financial services industry while supporting her efforts to acquire more sculpting skills and techniques. She studied with local sculptors such as Doris Snyder and Roberta Baskin Shefrin and traveled to the Loveland Sculpture Academy (now the Loveland Fine Arts Academy) in Loveland, Colorado. Eventually her desire to sculpt merged with her love of tile and architectural ceramics. Denise sought out instruction in sculptured tiles and eventually, architectural ceramics, under Peter King and Xinia Marin.
Now Denise has realized her dream and has devoted herself full time to her passion for D’Arte Designs. She applies all that she has learned through the years to create unique work that can be applied in the home, office or commercial environment.
Every aspect of the creation comes from Denise’s attention to detail. She selects which clay would be appropriate for the setting. Denise makes much of the clay she uses from her own formula that she has developed for use in exterior and large scale installations that require increased durability to withstand the elements. Interior art tiles may be made with earthenware or porcelain, depending on the setting and usage.
However, Denise’s creations begin with her clients. Their existing and idealized living environment, lifestyle and décor are incorporated into the design.
